Pictures from Sabah Adventure Challenge 2008

Race start, Day 1

Traversing above and across a waterfall in Kionsom
Running to bike leg, Tamparuli
tubing down a horrendous rapid... u can see it from my face how terrified i was

A bit delayed but here are the pictures from SAC

To summarize SAC:
  • It involves a lot of navigating.. in fact, non of the routes were marked, we were given grid maps and google maps (about 4-5 maps per day), your ability to use your compass will determine your success!! we really struggled last year with the navigation, this year was much better but one slight mistake was all it took to push us out of ranking... n no amount of improvement on day 2 and 3 were able to make up for it.
  • The disciplines include, mountainbiking crazy hills... (u know Sabah hills), on and offroad trailrunning, tubing down a rapid, traversing across a waterfall and the signature of SAC races, --> crossing hanging bridges~ (for the entire race, we crossed about 6-7 hanging bridges)
  • The race however, emphasizes a lot on bikes, so strong bikers have advantages. This is an endurance race, therefore, there is no use going too fast and risk getting lost (like we did).
  • Although this is a race, sometimes, it is best to form alliance (locals preferably) so that probability of getting lost is lessen--> risk mitigation. We only took that approach on the 2nd day.
  • The best part about this race is that, you get to appreciate the wonderful scenery along race route.. simply magnificent~
  • We started our race in Penampang, KK, and finished in Kundasang, near Mount Kinabalu..
  • Definitely will do SAC 2009 if schedule permits... a race worth doing if you're up for the challenge!

I've got to learn how to smile to the camera

A day before i went to Sabah Adv Challenge, 18th of March, was the UTP appreciation nite for co-curricular and sports activities for year 2007. I won the most outstanding award for individual sports achievement for:
ASEAN varsity rowing championships, Putrajaya- Champion
UNITEN varsity rowing championships, Putrajaya- 2nd place
South East Asian Rowing Federation Championships, Pattaya Thailand- 5th place
UM duathlon (varsity)- 2nd place
Perhentian Island Challenge (Elite Mix cat)- 5th place
I was given a tailor-made blazer, trophy and certificates, no cash prizes (bummer!!) and this was how I looked like... (pretty unhappy for an award recipient huhhh???? what was i thinking...) I think i have a naturally 'emotionless' face...

L-R: en mat noor rosli (Director of Student Affairs), yours truly, Datuk Seri Dr Zainal Abidin( Rector)

man, i really gotta work on that smile...

Great Eastern 30K run

It was a last minute decision to join GE run because i just had a minor operation to take out a lump on my right breast the saturday before (fibroidenoma it is called, non cancerous lump but advisable to be taken out). Doc says I shouldnt be running for at least 10-14 days..when he told me that, in my head, i was counting the days to GE from Sat the 12th. 8 days exactly but guess im too stubborn... (but i did very light training the entire week so i guess its ok). Anyway, I did only 20k.. not 30k..

So came sunday morning, Saiful picked me up from bangsar n we went to lake garden together. I never ran hartamas double hill before so i had no idea what the route was like. I started in front with Mariana... but decided to take it easy with a consistent pace throughout the race. n that is exactly what i did. First 10k was about 57mins, but i guess the hills must've slowed me down a lot coz i finished the race in 2hour04 mins. a much slower 2nd 10k. But overall, im quite happy i finished the race comfortably.

During the entire race, I saw a lot of familiar faces: azwar, fong, saiful, abu, adzim, jaja, karen, ahtiam, awea, shazly, bacin etc2... n many2 more..

********************
I mentioned in earlier post that I had good news...
well, I got into PowerBar Team Elite! the better news is that the contract is for 2008 n 2009! cool or what.

2007 in Review

2007 came and went by just like that. I will be 23 in 2008 and doing my final year final semester in uni. if everything goes well, I'll start working by the second half of the year. im so not ready for the 'real world'. huhu~

2007 has been a blessed year for me. I did my 8 months industrial internship in one of the best international oil and gas company- Schlumberger WTA Sdn Bhd. Being away for 32 weeks meant I had to forgo competitive racing for a while but I made the best out of the remaining half of 2007 when i got back. It is definitely a more relaxed year compared to 2006.

I was awarded UTP best athlete of 2006 in April. don't know if my achievements in 2007 is up to comparison. As i mentioned, it has been a relaxed year in terms of racing.

Races I've done in 2007:

Rowing:
ASEAN Varsity boat race, Putrajaya
UNITEN invitational boat race, Putrajaya
South East Asian Rowing Federation (SEARF) Championships, Pattaya

Adventure Race:
Sabah Adventure Race, Kota Kinabalu
Perhentian Island Challenge, Terengganu
Labuan International Sea Kayak Challenge

Triathlons:
Miri International Triathlon
PD international Triathlon
UM duathlon

Running races:
Adidas King of the Road 10km
PJ Half marathon 10 km

Hopefully the arrival of 2008 brings a whole new dimension of success, health, prosperity and happiness. Crusing into the 1st week of January and I've already received a good news. ;) hopefully there are more to come
